SG58 - National Day

National Day is the anniversary of a nation’s independence or founding. Singapore became an independent state in 1965, and so National Day is celebrated every year on 9 August to commemorate this event.

On this day, Singaporeans come together to celebrate our nation’s achievements as well as reflect on our history and progress. It's a time for joyous celebration and reflection on the shared values that have shaped us as a people and nation.

The main event of National Day takes place at The Padang in the heart of Singapore, where citizens gather to watch a spectacular parade full of floats, marching bands, dancers and more - all showing off their cultural pride!

The celebrations of Singapore’s National Day begin with a 21-gun salute and the hoisting of the national flag at the Istana. Throughout the day, there will be various events taking place all over Singapore such as performances by local artists, fun activities for children and exhibitions showcasing Singapore’s rich cultural heritage.

On 9 August itself, crowds gather in their thousands at The Padang to witness a spectacular parade which usually starts with marching contingents from different organisations such as schools, uniformed groups, community clubs and more. This is followed by a flypast by the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) aerobatic display team ‘Black Knights’.
